Stainless Steel Passivation

Stainless steel passivation includes thoroughly cleaning and removing contaminants from a part, then treating the part with acid to remove free iron from the surface. After PVI rinses the part, a layer of oxygen forms on the surface. This oxygen layer makes the part more corrosion resistant. PVI uses custom acid blends in conjunction with highly specialized custom-built wash equipment to perform our stainless steel passivation.

There are many benefits of passivation for newly machined stainless steel parts and components which include an extended product life, the creation of a chemical barrier to inhibit rust, less maintenance over the life of the part, and the cleaning of contamination from the surface of the component.

Parts can be tested in PVI’s in-house cleanliness laboratory to ensure they have been properly passivated to meet the customer’s unique needs. Some of these include:

  • ASTM A967
  • ASTM A380
  • SAC23
