Stainless Steel Passivation

What is stainless steel passivation?

Passivation includes thoroughly cleaning and removing contaminants from a part, then treating the part with acid to remove free iron from the surface. After PVI rinses the part, a layer of oxygen forms on the surface. This oxygen layer makes the part more corrosion resistant.

What are the benefits of passivating stainless steel?

There are many benefits of passivation for newly machined stainless steel parts and components. Some of these include:

  • Extended product life
  • Creation of a chemical barrier to inhibit rust
  • Less maintenance over the life of the part
  • Cleans contamination for the surface of the component

PVI uses several custom acid blends in conjunction with highly specialized custom wash equipment to passivate stainless steel. Customer parts can be tested in PVI’s in-house lab to ensure they have been properly passivated to meet the customer’s unique needs.

List of Specs:

  • ASTM A967
  • ASTM A380
  • SAC23
